pals – mates – chums – buddies – comrades – fellows – companions
That’s what they are.
They found each other on the first day of their first year in school. Since then, Meri Lane would wait for my daughter outside their room, and won’t get in without her. I began to be fearful of the day my daughter will be absent from class, not knowing if she will stand to stay outside or get in on her own…
The day did come, and I was glad to know that she survived the day!
The year was full of laughter, long hours on the phone, fun and games (though it was only the two of them at first, they started to let their other classmates join them later on), but it was also not without quarrels and tears. Just the normal drama of friendship, really… they’d quarrel and patch up, and move on.
Their first school year ended, summer came, and they spent more than a month of it together when they joined a Kiddie Crew Workshop and the Flores de Mayo. And together, they discovered new things, new faces, new friends.
Another school year has begun, and sadly, they are not classmates anymore. We (Meri Lane’s mom and I) got worried at first, because Lane has lost the enthusiasm usually felt by Kids (and parents) on their first days of school. She has cried, and asked for Pia to be transferred to her class, or she go back to first grade. Later on, she learned that they can’t always be together, and you can see how they exert some time and effort to connect with each other. One would drop by the other’s classroom, the hugs when they meet, and the endless chatter … till we, the mothers, remind them that the bell has rung and classes are starting.🙂
They are a team, the two of them. I’m happy of this, for one does need a friend (friends) to keep us going, in our journey to Life!
But I am also glad that they are starting to let other Kids into their lives, without forgetting and letting go of each other. It is then that I thought that their friendship did not last for only a particular time of their young lives.
Do you remember, when we were young, those promises we made.
The promise to be there for each other, no matter night or day.
The promise to keep secrets, no matter what they are.
The promise to be friends forever, no matter where we are…

Here’s wishing you all, a wonderful Thursday!
